Advanced Supply Chain: Turning pEPR Into an Opportunity for Smarter, Greener Logistics

The UK’s new packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR) scheme is more than just a compliance challenge, it’s a trigger for transformation. For retailers, it has sharpened the focus on pre-retail logistics, where packaging inefficiencies, inconsistent labelling, and unnecessary waste can quickly drive up costs and carbon emissions.

At Advanced Supply Chain (ASC), we see this as a chance for businesses to create leaner, greener supply chains. Our state-of-the-art facilities across the UK and Europe are designed to make products “retail-ready” from the outset, eliminating costly rework and minimising environmental impact. With automation, compliance checks, and integrated IT systems built into our operations, ASC is uniquely positioned to help retailers turn regulation into competitive advantage.

Stuart Greenfield, Sales Director at ASC, explains why many retailers are now rethinking their approach:

“High volumes of products are arriving at retailers’ warehouses and fulfilment centres from many different suppliers, in varying packaging and labelling formats. Items often have to be repackaged and relabelled to comply with retailers’ inventory systems and branding. This creates inefficiencies and material waste, purely because of a lack of consistency and compliance throughout supply chains.”

This is where ASC’s expertise and infrastructure come in. Our fulfilment centres are purpose-built to handle the complexity of modern supply chains, ensuring compliance at every stage. Whether it’s packaging, labelling, or transport, we have the facilities and technology to make sure retailers get it right the first time.

“The pEPR has prompted retailers to look again at these issues,” Greenfield adds. “Our facilities are designed to help eliminate that waste.”

Smart facilities, smarter systems

Beyond warehousing, our award winning IT system Vector gives retailers complete visibility of their supply chain. This means optimised vehicle loading, reduced empty miles, and fewer emissions without compromising speed or accuracy.

“With the right IT capabilities and transport management systems, it’s possible to consolidate inbound and outbound vehicle movements during pre-retail,” says Greenfield. “Transportation load capacity is being optimised to avoid part-loaded HGVs. That means fewer miles, fewer vehicles, and lower emissions.”

By embedding compliance into every process, ASC helps retailers meet regulatory requirements whilst also helping them save money, improve efficiency, and strengthen their sustainability credentials.

Greenfield sums it up:

“Improving packaging compliance and consistency eliminates errors that can cause deliveries to be rejected. Getting supplier orders right the first time avoids redeliveries and any associated emissions. The pEPR has given retailers the focus to address this, and we’re providing the facilities and expertise to make it happen.”

With pEPR on the horizon, Advanced Supply Chain is the partner retailers can rely on to combine compliance with commercial advantage, delivering sustainability, efficiency, and growth through smarter logistics.
